How CFR Helps: Talking Points

1. Casting for Recovery, established in 1996, is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit support and educational organization for women who have or have had breast cancer, which uses the sport of fly-fishing to encourage mental and physical healing.

2. Casting for Recovery’s 2 - day retreat program instructs women in fly fishing’s gentle casting techniques, which provide therapeutic motion for joint and soft tissue stretching in areas affected by radiation or surgery.

3. Over 850 active, trained volunteers will help plan and conduct 37 retreats in 27 states in 2008. Our core retreat volunteer teams are composed of women who are medical and counseling professionals as well as fly fishing instructors, while men and women both serve as volunteer “River Helpers” during part of the retreat program.

4. At the end of 2008, close to 3,500 women will have participated in 226 Casting for Recovery retreat programs.

5. The retreat is offered at no cost to the participants, and Casting for Recovery depends on donations from individuals, foundations, and companies to underwrite the costs of our programs.

6. In addition to support from many individuals, organizations, and companies, our national sponsors include The Hartford, The Orvis Company, and Under Armour.

7. To find out more about the program, or to make a secure online donation, we encourage a visit to www.castingforrecovery.org.
